ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A defence lawyer says Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf will make his first appearance before a court on Feb. 18 to face a high treason case.

Anwar Mansoor Khan gave this assurance to the court Friday in Islamabad.

Musharraf seized power in a 1999 coup and was forced to step down in 2008.

He faces the charges for his 2007 decision to impose a state of emergency and detain judges.

He has skipped several earlier court hearings, forcing judges to issue an arrest warrant for him. But the warrant was “bailable” — meaning he could avoid jail by applying for bail.

Musharraf is currently in hospital, and Khan says he wanted to go abroad for treatment of a heart disease.
