An Indian general stabbed in a London street used his military training to fight off attackers who were intent on killing him, he said Tuesday.
Lieutenant-general Kuldip Singh Brar claimed he was the victim of was a “pure assassination” attempt by Sikhs in revenge for his role in the 1984 Golden Temple siege.
The 78 year-old is hated among Sikhs for leading the Indian army assault at Amritsar to break the siege by Sikh militants which left almost 500 civilians dead.
Since then he has faced repeated death threats and several assassination attempts despite having “Z-level security”, the highest level provided by the Indian government. In an interview on Indian television shortly after his discharge from hospital, he said four “big men”, all Sikhs, had tried to kill him.
He and his wife, Meena, who were on a private visit had been walking in Oxford Circus on Sunday evening when they were attacked by four bearded men. One pushed his wife into a wall while two others held him for another to cut his throat.
“I kicked and kicked and boxed them and hit them and fought with them. I didn’t let them do it very easily otherwise their end would have been fulfilled and the knife would have gone right through my neck,” he said. The men ran off as passersby approached, and Lt Gen Brar was taken to hospital by ambulance.
