After a nine-year relationship filled with “emotional turmoil,” a gay man in India has finally been accepted by his family and allowed to marry his transgendered partner, according to the Hindustan Times.

Shadab Hasan, a 29-year-old man who runs a local transport company in Madhya Pradesh, plans to marry longtime transgendered partner Sanjana, who works as a counsellor with a community-based organization for India’s third gender people, later this year.

According to the Indian news agency, the couple’s marriage will be a first for Madhya Pradesh, a conservative Indian state which frowns upon the homosexual and transgendered community.

While Hasan’s sister and brother-in-law were always accepting of the pair’s relationship, it took time for the rest of his family to come to terms with it.

The couple admit to “having been through a lot of emotional turmoil,” throughout their relationship, the Hindustan Times reported.

“We have always been rebuked by families, friends and relatives. As a teenager, I have lived and followed the traditions of eunuchs, danced in gatherings and even travelled to far off places to fend for myself. Going to college was a nightmare and I visited my family only after it was dark. It seemed life was heading nowhere,” said Sanjana.

According to the Hindustan Times, she was even beaten by her own brother because he did not agree with her lifestyle.

But now “it is all over,” said Sanjana hopefully.

While Hasan was originally arranged to marry another girl, his family finally accepted his partner and called off the arranged marriage in May.

“They called me home to tell me they had accepted me as their daughter-in-law,” Sanjana told the Hindustan Times about her acceptance into the Hasan family. “Our families have met and preparations for marriage are on.”
