Mela is a Sanskrit word for gathering. The India Mela, which starts Monday, is a week-long celebration and an opportunity for Victoria’s South Asian community to share the richness of Indian culture with their neighbours. This is the fourth year of the event, hosted by the India Canada Cultural Association.

The previous three celebrations have been so successful that organizers have decided to extend the event to a full week. There will be two hours of programming every evening and two full days of entertainment next weekend.

Local performers Shane-e Punjab Apna Virsa join Vancouver-based groups Bollywood Hungama, A-slam and Jawani Ki Jhatka on stage. They will present traditional Indian dances including the Bhangra and the Dandia/Gabra, an ancient dance form that combines harmony and balance. There will also be classical Indian music and multicultural acts.

Visitors can sample traditional Indian cuisine as well as purchase arts and handicrafts.

Admission is free and the event runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 10, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at Centennial Square. For more information click here.
