A new aviation agreement will increase the number of direct flights between Taiwan and Canada, the Canadian Trade Office in Tapei (CTOT) has announced.

The air transport agreement, signed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan, is projected to increase passenger flights between the two countries by 61 per cent within two years and also lifts the cap on cargo flights, according to news publication, Taipei Times.

The previous aviation agreement only allowed Taiwanese carriers 13 flights per week, for both passenger and cargo flights. China Airlines currently flies seven passenger flights to

Vancouver and EVA Airways carries three passenger flights to Vancouver and three to Toronto. Under the new agreement, those numbers could incresase to 17 flights per week.

“This arrangement recognizes the ongoing demand for the movement of people and goods between Canada and Taiwan, and reflects a desire to improve upon our strong long-term economic and people-to-people relationships,” CTOT executive director Kathleen Mackay said in a media release.

According to Taipei Times, statistics show that the occupancy rate for flights from Taiwan to Canada is at about 84 per cent and that in 2010 about 137,000 tourists travelled between the two countries.

The new agreement will also ease travel for Indo-Canadians visiting the subcontinent, as Taipei is a regular stop-over flight.
