The family of a nine-month-old Pakistani baby charged with attempted murder has taken him into hiding, according to Reuters.

The baby, who Reuters identified as Musa Khan, appeared in a Lahore court on Thursday, alongside his father and grandfather – all charged with attempted murder for their alleged involvement in a mob that pelted stones at and attacked a police officer trying to collect overdue gas bills.

The young boy’s grandfather, Muhammed Yaseen, told Reuters he’s sent his grandson to a central Pakistani city “for protection.”

“Police are vindictive. Now they are trying to settle the issue on personal grounds,” he told the news wire.

After the First Information Report (FIR) was filed, Lahore police claimed they were unaware one of the accused was a child. Police officials suspended the officer who filed the FIR and the nine-month-old was granted an interim bail.

According to Reuters, the baby is due to appear in court on April 12, but his family isn’t sure if they’ll bring him.

According to the FIR, Yaseen’s entire family – which includes the baby – beat up and threatened to kill the police officer.

And according to Reuters, the case highlights Pakistan’s dysfunctional justice system and how some police officers are so poorly trained many aren’t qualified to write a crime report and are often accused of corruption.

An investigation has been sought into the charges against the infant.
