The Surrey temple president charged with attempted murder has been assaulted in custody.

Surrey RCMP confirmed Baldev Singh Kalsi, 66, was taken to hospital at around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday with facial injuries after an altercation with an inmate at the Surrey pre-trial centre. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Police have identified a 42-year-old male inmate as a possible suspect. They do not believe the assault was related the charge against Kalsi, whose wife was found in their home Sunday with serious injuries. She is on life support in hospital.

Kalsi is in his fourth year as president of the Gurdwara Sahib Brookside.
