The City of Surrey has pushed back a public hearing on the proposed South Surrey casino by more than a month in order to allow staff more time to prepare the application’s information.

While Dec. 10 was noted to be the likely date of the public hearing for the project’s gaming application, the City of Surrey posted a notice Friday morning saying that staff required more time to compile the information necessary before gaming application is considered.

As such, the application itself will no longer be considered on Monday, Nov. 26 as scheduled but on Dec. 10 instead. Following that, a public hearing is likely to take place on Jan. 14.

According to the notice posted online, staff still needs to review public feedback, receive and consider comments from the City of White Rock, the Township of Langley and the Semiahmoo First Nation, receive and review a socio-economic impact study from the BCLC and receive a finalized traffic impact study for the proposed development.

Additionally, the procedures for the proposed public hearing are also outlined in the announcement, noting that council has the ability to set the speaking guidelines.

Those guidelines are as follows:

– There will be no sign-in process for people wishing to speak at this meeting.

– Attendees who wish to speak will be required to state their name and address (which will form part of the public record) when they are before the microphone. The speaker will then be permitted to address Council.

– Each speaker will be limited to addressing Council for no more than three to five minutes.

– It is requested that attendees form two lines, one on each side of council chambers. The mayor will then call speakers forward one at a time, alternating between the two lines.

– Once an attendee has spoken for their allotted time, they will be asked to move to the foyer in order to allow another attendee to enter the Council chamber (and await their own turn to speak).

– Audio and video of the proceedings will be broadcast in the foyer outside of council chambers. This will enable attendees who are unable to fit inside council chambers to be able to observe and listen to other speakers.
