Mexican police say the alleged torturers who mutilated a gynaecologist and left her for dead never existed and that the female victim made it up in order to get her boyfriend to return to her.

Police uncovered the woman’s apparent lies after questioning her about inconsistencies in her statement, and say that as a result Dr Sabina Mota, 30, had admitted that the whole thing was part of an elaborate fraud.

During the scam she even arranged for two of her fingers to be cut off, and hacked at her stomach claiming that her attackers wanted to cut out her ovaries and her womb as punishment for failing to save the life of a female patient the police also say never existed.

The story from the woman that was repeated around the world was that she had been kidnapped as she left the hospital where she worked in the city of Zamora, in the Mexican state of Michoacan de Ocampo, after a night shift in the maternity ward. And after being mutilated she said she was forced to write on a wall a message in her own blood admitting her guilt.

But now police say she made it all up including the messages sent to her boyfriend warning that they planned to kill her. In fact the messages had been sent by a mobile phone registered to her son who called from a hotel in Mexico City.

The Attorney General of Justice of the Mexican state of Michoacan, Jose Martin Godoy Castro, told media that the case was now being treated as a self-kidnapping carried out with the aim of getting attention from the woman’s boyfriend and her family. He said that the extent of the injuries indicated that the woman had severe psychological problems and she is currently under examination. At the same time, while they await the results of the psychological testing, a criminal case is also being planned against her, he said.

He added: “If it turns out that she is as we suspect no longer in control of her actions, then the criminal charges will be dropped but she will end up in a psychiatric institution.”

The woman’s story had apparently been so believable that even her colleagues at the hospital had rallied round her and demanded more protection for police from patients angry when medical treatment did not work out.
