A Spanish female fan of the Little Mermaid has opened an academy teaching people how to transform themselves into mermaids so that they can take to the sea to campaign for environmental perfection.

Susana Seuma, 40, has opened a special academy teaching people how to wear a special costume that transforms their legs into a fish tail that, allowing them to swim at high speed. She says she hopes the graduates will continue to practice their mermaid skills in their home countries where they can be ambassadors for the protection of marine life.

She said: “I was inspired to create the Mermaid Academy here in the Mediterranean by the movie “The Little Mermaid” that I saw as a young girl. I really loved the character of Ariel.”

She said she came up with the idea of matching her passion for the Disney film with her desire to help protect the environment when she was in America with her husband and learned about the possibility to swim like a mermaid after seeing somebody using the special mermaid tail swimming devices.

She said: “I was surprised how easy they were to use and I decided that when I got back I was going to spread the word about this wonderful way to enjoy the natural environment and to campaign for the natural world.”

The academy is on the beach of Cala Romana, in the town of Tarragona, in the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia.

She said: “We start people out in the swimming pool which is pretty easy as most people get the hang of it within an hour, and then after people are proficient we take the graduates into the sea. We also teach them about the problems of marine pollution and what can be done to tackle it.

“But we don’t just teach the swimming and protect the natural environment, we also look at the cultural and the sporting side. I think it’s important to have the Academy here because the mythology around the mermaids originated in the Mediterranean and it’s great that we are reintroducing mermaids and mermen to the region.”

She said her mermaids and mermen were being encouraged to take part in environmental campaigns by putting themselves forward as ambassadors for the sea.

Each class has a minimum of four trainee mermaids and mermen and anyone taking part needs to be at least eight-years-old.
