VANCOUVER DESI
It seems environmentalist David Suzuki is still intent on saving the world. The only difference this time is he’s planning to do it via dance moves.According to a press release on his foundation’s website, Suzuki has partnered with Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) to launch Punjabi by Nature, an awareness campaign aimed at inspiring the South Asian community to spend time in nature.
The catch for Suzuki? In return for citizens’ efforts, he has agreed to learn – and perform – a bhangra dance move.
“Spending time outdoors is good for our health, head and happiness. We want to raise awareness about the benefits of spending time in nature within cultural communities across Canada,” says Harpreet Johal, of the David Suzuki Foundation, in the release. “Punjabi by Nature helps get people outside and celebrates the Punjabi culture of bhangra.”
As a bonus, people who sign up for the Punjabi by Nature challenge before Oct. 14 get to vote on the dance move Suzuki will perform. They will also be entered into a contest to win two tickets to hear Suzuki speak at the PICS 25th Anniversary Celebration on Nov. 2 in Surrey, B.C.
In addition, there will also be a nature walk and discussion on the health benefits of going outside every remaining Sunday of the campaign (Sept 30, Oct. 7 and Oct. 14) at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey at 1 p.m.
