It’s been two years since Sarabjit Johal vanished from her Surrey home, but her husband won’t give up hope.

“I’m still waiting for her,” Malkit Johal told Vancouver Desi on Wednesday. “It’s been two years today (and) there’s no clue for her.”

It was Nov. 28, 2010 when the 21-year-old newlywed was last seen in the home she shared with Malkit and his parents near 126th Street and 96 Avenue. Around 3:30 a.m. it’s believed she left the house in pajamas and took off in her green 1992 Toyota Camry. Days later RCMP found the car in New Westminster, but there was no trace of Johal. The car still sits in Malkit’s driveway today.

According to Malkit, the couple had only been married eight months at the time and he worked at a pizza shop and Johal worked as a cleaner at Chocolate Works in Coquitlam. Malkit returned home from work early that morning around 2:30 a.m. and Johal was waiting up for him, he said. They spoke briefly and then he left to a nearby gas station for a few things. When he returned he realized her car wasn’t in the driveway.

“Tried calling her, she didn’t answer,” he said.

So he waited a couple of hours and then called RCMP.

“Since then they’re looking,” he said.

While Johal’s case is still considered active with Surrey RCMP’s serious crimes and missing persons units, there hasn’t been much movement.

“There has been no significant changes or updates on the file,” said spokesman Cpl. Bert Paquette. “We are following on tips and or possible sightings when we do receive those calls, but since the disappearance of Johal these tips and or calls, or possible sightings … have become quite rare.”

While Malkit admit it’s “pretty frustrating” there’s been no trace of his wife, he commended RCMP for keeping in touch with him about the case.

But to this day he still can’t explain her disappearance, which he said was out of character for her.

“I didn’t understand — why did she do that?” he asked. “I’m waiting for the RCMP (to) call me anytime and tell me that we find her.”

Johal is described as five foot six inches tall, 146 pounds, with long brown hair.

She is of South Asian descent and was last seen wearing a pink T-shirt, green jacket and white pajama bottoms with green shading.

According to Malkit, officers told him there’s a chance she may have left the country or that she’s no longer alive.

“I hope she’s still here,” he said. “She’s a part of my life, so I’m waiting for her.”

Anyone with information on Johal is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers.
