Local music producer Nick Chowlia decided to use his artform to keep his “culture going.”

The musician and radio host collaborated with 35 Punjabi and Sikh artists from across the Lower Mainland to release the “religious track” for Vaisakhi, “Guru Maneo Granth.”

He first released a teaser of the song, then dropped the track and video a couple of weeks ago to coincide with Vaisakhi this April, the annual celebration of the Punjab harvest time and the birth day of Sikhs, which dates back to 1699.

“(It’s about) keeping the culture going – that was the main thing behind all this,” Chowlia told Vancouver Desi. “For me, getting these guys together was a four-year dream.”

The video showcases all collaborating artists, fading from one singer’s face to the next as they sing along to the Punjabi lyrics.

According to Chowlia, he also made an effort to get young artists involved, so the message could reach the younger generation and show them “the path of Punjabis – this is the path of Sikhish,” he said.

“(So they can) get to know about religion, where you’re coming from,” said Chowlia. “We try to, in particular, just keep the culture going, keep my religion going.”

While Chowlia won’t be performing at Surrey’s Vaisakhi events Saturday, he’ll be coordinating the Red FM stage.

“Vaisakhi to me is basically . . . getting to know the culture,” he said. “The celebration itself is meeting people, meeting friends and family, hanging out and seeing what’s actually happening at the Vaisakhi parade.”
