Rats have caused chaos in the latest round of voting in elections in India after they destroyed dozens of electronic vote counting machines by eating the cables.

With over 800 million voters in a population of 1.23 billion, India has resorted to the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) that have been in use since 1999, where they were such a success that they were used all over the country in 2004.

The EVMs reduce the time in both casting a vote and declaring the results compared to the old paper ballot system, but voters in Ghaziabad, a town close to the capital New Delhi, have ended up furious after it was discovered rats had eaten the cables in the machines.

The EVMs had been stored in a pre-designated strong room that was located near a wholesale wheat market, where the rats had apparently made their home.

“We had taken all possible measures to protect the EVMs. We realize how important it is to ensure that the EVMs are not harmed in any way. But rodent trouble was something we had not expected at all,” admitted a senior official of the Ghaziabad district administration.
