Hindus outraged with Urban Outfitters latest duvet cover featuring Lord Ganesha

The Hindu community is outraged by clothing company Urban Outfitter’s latest addition to its apartment line – a duvet cover featuring a life-sized image of the religion’s god of wisdom Lord Ganesha.

According to a release from Nevada-based Hindu statesmen Rajan Zed, the community is urging the company to immediately withdraw the item, which is priced at $129 to $169 online and described as a “UO Exclusive” and “topped with a standout illustration by the talented Valentina Ramos.”

According to the release, the religious community is calling the product “inappropriate” as Lord Ganesha is highly revered and meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines – “not to be slept upon.”

“Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial or other agenda (is) not okay as it hurts the devotees,” said Zed.

Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has also demanded an apology from the company’s president and CEO.

“Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled,” he said.

According to Britain’s Daily Mail, this is not Zed’s first battle with the retail company, as he issued a similar statement in December when Urban Outfitters sold $8 socks that also featured an image of Lord Ganesha. The store issued an apology and pulled the item from shelves after the upset in the Hindu community.

Urban Outfitters has not yet issued a response concerning the latest Lord Ganesha duvet.

Ganesha is a Hindu deity with the head of an elephant and the body of a Siddha, which is a term for someone who has reached physical and mental enlightenment. Ganesha is revered as the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles.
