One-legged dancer who earned runner-up on India’s Got Talent taking country by storm (w/ gallery)

The 27-year-old runner up for India’s Got Talent – one-legged dancer Shubh Kaur Ghumman – is taking India by storm.

According to Britain’s Daily Mail, Ghumman had her leg amputated four years ago after a number of medical blunders at Indian hospitals – but she refused to let her newfound disability discourage her.

Her show-stopping moves wowed the India’s Got Talent judges and amazed audiences, which ultimately earned her place as runner-up at the show’s finale in March. Although she didn’t take home the top prize, she’s become a celebrity in her hometown of Ludhiana and is going on to tour the world with her talents, according to the British tabloid.

But it was a gruelling journey to get to the positive place she’s at today.

In October 2009 , while she was at college studying to become a nurse, she caught a lift on the back of a friend’s moped. The bike skidded as it hit a sharp corner and Ghumman and her friend were thrown off. She fractured her knee badly and was taken to a local government hospital where she was left lying in a hospital bed for about two weeks, the Daily Mail reported.

“The negligence in a basic government hospital is terrible. My mum begged doctors to treat me, but they just put my leg in a brace and left me. They didn’t even attempt to treat my fracture,” she said.

When she finally received her first surgery, doctors hit a vein and couldn’t finish the procedure. Infection eventually spread throughout her leg and it wasn’t until a year later that she finally amputated her leg.

While many of her friends started to ignore her after the surgery, she stayed positive and read books about disabled achievers, according to the Daily Mail.

“The accident changed my life; it not only took my leg but it gave me the determination to fulfill my dreams,” she said. “I decided not to fall into darkness but show the world that I was a strong person and continue my passion for dance. My mother was shocked but happily agreed to support me.”

She managed to track down a local dance studio, Rockstar Academy in Chandigarh, that accepted her for her disability.

After some hard work and determination she signed up for India’s Got Talent in February and the rest is history.

“Now I’m dancing for a living and I love it,” she said. “My life has changed completely. I have seen the darkest days but now everything seems beautiful. People recognise me when I go out, they ask me for photographs and autographs. It is an amazing feeling.”
