An influential cleric, who led a massive protest against the government in Islamabad, has been summoned by Canadian authorities to explain why he violated his oath to not enter Pakistan, a story in the Hindustan Times reports.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police summoned Tahirul Qadri, the head of the Tehrik Minhaj-ul-Quran, to appear on Feb. 5, says the article. The RCMP said Qadri took the oath while seeking asylum in Canada in 2008, saying there were threats to his life.
His asylum application was accepted on Oct. 17, 2009 and he was issued a Canadian passport about six months ago.
Qadri and members of his family reportedly have been booked to fly to Toronto on Jan. 27.
