A pet parrot in India helped crack a murder case that’s been baffling Indian police for nearly a week.

On Feb. 20, Neelam Sharma, 45, along with her dog, was found murdered in her Agra home, according to the Times of India.

It was the woman’s husband, Vijay Sharma, the editor of a Hindi daily newspaper, who pointed the finger at his nephew, Ashutosh — after he was tipped off by his pet parrot Hercule’s strange behaviour.

“During discussions … whenever Ashutosh’s name was mentioned, the parrot would start screeching. This raised my suspicion and I informed the police,” Sharma said.

An Agra police official told the Times of India that after questioning, the nephew confessed to the crime.

“We checked his call details and took him in custody,” the police official said.

“He accepted his crime and informed us that he was accompanied by an accomplice. They had entered the house with the intention of taking away cash and other valuables.”

According to the Times of India, the nephew was worried Neelam would recognize him, so he stabbed her – unaware he was under the watchful eye of her beloved pet.
