South Asian culture took over Granville Street on Saturday with India Live, an event organized by Vancouver’s not-for-profit South Asian Family Assocation (SAFA).

The day-long event offered a new take on SAFA’s former event Sawan Mela, which was a song and dance-based performance the organization ran for ten years. While the former event was passive – in that the audience would come only to watch performers – India Live boasted both “active and passive zones,” offering yoga, cricket, bhangra and dhol lessons, sari and turban tying, roti making, Bollywood makeovers as well as live performances by Shiamak Davar’s Vancouver dance team and Toronto’s Manj Muski, formerly of RDB.

Indo Canadian actor Vinay Virmani was also at the event promoting his upcoming film – produced by Bollywood’s Salman Khan – Dr. Cabbie, which releases Sept. 19.

Virmani was sporting his Canadian pride wearing a Canucks jersey as he appeared on stage alongside Manj Musik.
