Air travellers at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the Indian capital New Delhi are facing an unexpected hazard in the form of a plague of monkeys.

The monkeys have been making frequent raids into the terminal building targeting the restaurant where they throw crockery around and stage raids on the food counter before making off with their prizes.

Airport officials confirmed there have been several incidents over the past month with monkey raiders rushing into the building, before dashing out with stolen food usually from the restaurant.

A spokesman said they were trying to use more security to make it difficult for the monkeys to get into the building in the first place.
