Ganesh Chaturthi opens with Indian PM greeting

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday greeted the nation on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, a Hindu festival celebrated across the country.

In a message issued by his office here, the prime minister said: “The festival symbolises the cultural unity of the country, bringing people of all walks of life together.”

“May this festival of Ganesh Chaturthi remove all obstacles, and bring all-round development, harmony and prosperity to all,” he added.

The festival will be celebrated across the nation from Wednesday.

The fest begins with the installation of colourful statutes of Lord Ganesha in homes and in the street. Worshippers must not look at the moon on the first night. On the final day, Ananta Chaturdasi, statues are walked through the streets as worshippers sing and dance. The statues are immersed in water to close out the festival.

A ritual is performed for each statue called Pranapratishhtha Puja, which involves the recitation of mantras and offerings of flowers, coins, sweets, and rice.
