Police officer killed in Kolkata

Kolkata, Feb 12 (IANS) A police officer was killed and another man injured in firing by miscreants during a clash between student activists of the Trinamool Congress and the Congress at a college here Tuesday.

Tapas Chowdhury, an officer in the Special Branch, was among a posse of policemen trying to control the clashing students in the Garden Reach area.

The violence erupted over the issue of picking up nomination forms for the student union election in Harimohan Ghose College.

Suddenly, crude bombs were hurled and someone opened gun fire, a police officer said.

“Chowdhury was injured while trying to control the situation. He died in a hospital,” he said.

A youth who too was injured is in hospital.
