Delta doesn’t permit anyone to reserve a picnic shelter in North Delta’s Annieville Park after Labour Day. Unless your name is Jinny Sims, that is.
A frustrated uncle is livid that his three-year-old niece’s birthday party was bounced from the park’s picnic shelter on Sunday to make way for the local MP’s annual free family barbecue for her constituents.
Gerry Madore said his sister-in-law Nadine called Delta’s parks department in the summer to try to reserve the covered shelter for her daughter Haley’s birthday party on Sept. 16 but was told that after Labour Day it’s only first come, first served.
Indeed, the only park in Delta that can be booked year-round is Ladner Harbour Park.
Picnic shelters in Delta’s other parks can only be booked between Victoria Day and Labour Day, for a reservation fee of $120.
So, Haley’s family decided to chance it and arrived at 8 a.m. Sunday, hoping to beat other parties to the shelter. Luckily for them, no one was there, so they set up Haley’s party, decorations and all, and were waiting for some 15 or 20 guests. It was a beautiful sunny day and all was clear sailing. That is, until a Delta parks guy drove up in his truck.
“We’re ready to rock and roll, have a good time,” Madore recalled. “Next thing we know, a parks guy comes up and says we have to go – it’s booked, for Jinny Sims.”
Madore was stunned. “We were told you can’t reserve,” he protested. “They said it was first come, first served.”
The parks rep was pleasant enough.
“His exact words were ‘I guess she has some clout, some pull.’ He kind of put his arms up in the air and said, ‘I don’t know.’”
So Madore’s family had to pull down the balloons, happy birthday sign and ribbons, and move on. Haley still had her party, but on a single picnic table elsewhere in the park.
“I’m livid,” Madore said. Jinny Sims’ Annual Family BBQ was a free event for the MP’s constituents, with everyone welcome. There was face painting, a bouncy castle and other activities for children.
“It was amazing,” Sims said. “We had over 700 people come in.”
She said she was planning to have the party in July or August but it was delayed. “My staff makes all these arrangements.
“I feel terrible,” Sims said, about Haley’s party being bumped. “I told the family that. I wasn’t aware of any of this going on.”
Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said the parks staff should have handled things differently.
“Very sad, I’m sorry about that,” Jackson said. “It’s not fair. What’s good for one is good for all, whether you’re a little three-year-old or a big MP.”

GO NDP GO
Seems to me Delta Parks staff is to blame, not Jinny Sims (and I don’t even like the Liberals). Delta Parks permitted the MP to skirt the rules and reserve the shelter. Once the reservation was given, the Parks staff should have immediately put up signs on the shelter informing the public about the upcoming event and the unavailability of the shelter for private events during that day. Unfortunately, this did not happen, but it was not Jinny Sim’s fault.
Absolutely!
Nice of her to throw her staff under the bus and act like she is not to blame. Not sure how it would have played out if the family had refused to move. They were much nicer about it than I would have been.
What do you expect from a politician of any stripe? Double-talk and avoidance of responsibility (“It was my staff”).
They’re all crooks, really.
You must have been referring to all the BC PC MP’s who Global made fools of with their silence on closing Kits. Sheeple. Anybody, but Cons 2015
I would not have moved either. Never did like Jinny Sims, far too left-wing for my taste.
Spoken like a true Dipper Maria. My Party Right or Wrong !
Truth is, the story that the NDP works for the average people and the working families is a lie. They work for the highly paid Unions and their leader is a scofflaw who cheats on his transit fairs. We are fools if we allow them back into power.
your right the NDP works for unions. And unions work for the people. since the libs have got in power the price of gas has tripled property tax has tripled with over inflated housing prices. they have destroyed the forest industry. sold government assets cut programs. they have made the rich super rich and the average middle income earners poor. A divide like we have never seen before. they continue to kiss America’s ass to the point where we are really just another US state. good bye Clark don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Ah yes. The Union Basher. They tend to be totally unaware of how many “perks” they enjoy because of Unions. Like Weekends.
Considering the sad state our country is in with the Conservatives in power, this family should be happy to move the birthday party for Jinny Sims somewhere else.
GO NDP GO in 2015 !!!!!!!!!!!
Only radical left wing polititian would be able to ruin a small girls birthday party. Sims did’nt care for children when she was the head of the BCTF and her attitude has’nt changed. Easy to blame her organizers-refuses to take responsibility.
nice canned response with loads of cliche
Thanks to the BC Libs, And NeoCons in Ottawa, every man, woman, and child owes $36,000.00 to these thieves. Enjoy a lifetime of debt payment, James. Neither of those parties are left wing. Besides, your beef should be with Delta City Hall. Think about it, if you can get past the mind control.
Jinny is lucky. I wouldn’t have moved.
You have got to be kidding!!!
I absolutely would not have moved for love or money. Who do they think they are?
Regardless of what political party she is with, this is just wrong a double standard.
