Jaipur, June 26 (IANS) A 14-year-old girl and her 25-year-old boyfriend consumed poison and then jumped into a well in Rajasthan’s Sikar district Monday, police said. She died while his condition is critical.
The girl’s body was retrieved from the well early Monday morning, while the man is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Police said that during preliminary investigation, it was found both had attempted suicide over opposition to their relations from their families.
According to the police, the incident took place in Sawaipura village in the district, some 150 km from Jaipur.
“The girl, Manohari Kumari, was a Class 9 student at a private school in the village. As her parents lived in Maharasthra for work, she was staying with her grandfather,” said a police officer.
He added that girl’s grandfather said that he woke up around 3 a.m. Monday and found Manohari missing.
“He and other family members searched for the girl and found her in a well situated near the house three hours later,” said the officer.
Police and other villagers pulled Manohari and Omprakash Jaat out of the well.
“The girl was dead by the time she was rescued. Omprakash has been referred to a hospital in Jaipur due to his critical condition,” said the officer.
He added that both had consumed poison before jumping into the well.
“We have not recovered a suicide note, but it seems they had developed a relationship which was being opposed by their family members. Depressed over this, both attempted the extreme step together,” said the officer.
