Sri Lankan prison officials hunt for 5 escapees after riot that killed 27

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — A Sri Lankan prison official says police are hunting for five prisoners still missing after an escape last week during a prison riot that left 27 inmates dead.
Prison Commissioner Gamini Kulathunga said Tuesday that search operations for the five are underway by both prison officials and police. Six escaped prisoners have already been captured.
Friday’s shootout at the Welikada prison in the capital Colombo also left 42 others wounded, including police, soldiers and inmates.
Kulathunga said the prison had returned to normal and that relatives were now allowed to see the inmates, and that suspects in the rioting would start appearing in court from Wednesday.
Officials say the riot started when prisoners attacked a search team looking for drugs and cellphones.
