Sri Lanka’s parliament appoints lawmakers to investigate impeachment motion on chief justice

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka’s parliament has appointed 11 lawmakers to investigate the accusations in an impeachment motion against the country’s chief justice.
A group of government lawmakers submitted the motion two weeks ago that accuses Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake of having unexplained wealth and misusing power. It called for a Parliament Select Committee to investigate 14 charges cited in the motion.
The committee that speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced Wednesday has seven government lawmakers and 4 from opposition parties.
Bandaranayake has rejected the allegations against her.
Opposition parties and independent analysts say the impeachment process is a politically motivated attempt to stifle the judiciary’s independence and concentrate power for President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
