The aggravated assault charge against the president of Surrey’s Brookside Sikh temple was upgraded to an attempted murder charge on Tuesday, according to a tweet from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Baldev Singh Kalsi, 66, was initially charged with aggravated assault Monday afternoon, following a weekend “domestic related” incident that resulted in his wife being airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This tragic incident is domestic related and not a random attack,” Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a statement Monday.

According to Pound, the woman remains in hospital on life support and is listed in critical condition.

Kalsi is serving his fourth year as president of the Gurdwara Sahib Brookside, said the temple’s senior vice president Sardul Singh Rehal.

News about the charge against Kalsi and his wife’s injuries came as a shock, he said.

“We don’t know anything about his personal life. We don’t have any signs about this. It’s really shocking for our community and especially for the temple.”

Rehal said Kalsi goes to the temple every day and Kalsi’s wife Narinder is also a regular temple-goer. The couple has three adult children.

Surrey RCMP responded around noon Sunday to a call about a woman in serious medical distress. They were dispatched to a home in the 19400-block 32 Avenue, where they found a woman with life-threatening injuries. She was quickly transported to hospital by air ambulance.

While police had a man in custody Sunday, charges weren’t approved against Kalsi until Monday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing as IHIT continues to canvas the neighbourhood and process the scene.

Kalsi is to appear in Surrey court on Wednesday.
