The City of Surrey’s Rakhi Project, a domestic abuse awareness initiative, is launching a social media photo challenge to get dialogue going in the community.

The contest, which will run July 14 to Aug. 10, is asking entrants to take a photo with a Rakhi Project purple umbrella and tweet or Instagram the photo along with the complete phrase, “I’ll shelter the ones I love because ______ #RakhiProject.”

The city’s fourth annual Rakhi Project stems from the traditional South Asian Rakhi celebration that honours the relationship between brothers and sisters, in which a sister ties a purple rakhi thread-bracelet around her brother’s wrist as a symbol of love and respect and the brother wears it to show he stands with his sister against domestic abuse.

The purple braided Rakhi bracelets are being sold for $5 at a number of Surrey businesses and this year there’s also the addition of purple umbrellas,  which symbolize protection and Surrey’s Coalition Against Domestic Abuse’s work on education. The umbrellas will pop up in locations around Surrey for Rakhi-related events.

Watch for the umbrella displays (so you can take a photo for the challenge) at the following locations:

  • Surrey RCMP Main Detachment – July 14-August 10
  • SFU Surrey – July 14-July 21
  • Surrey Fusion Fest – July 19 and 20
  • Surrey City Hall – July 28 – August 10
  • Downtown Surrey BIA Movies Under the Stars – August 2 and 9
All entries in the photo challenge will be eligible to win prizes, including Rakhi Project purple umbrellas and gift cards.

This year’s Rakhi Project kicked off with a freeze mob at Surrey City Hall in June. Watch the Public Service Announcement below, which was filmed at the launch:
