Surrey’s downtown core unfit for run, marathon ‘highly unlikely’ this year

SURREY – The chair of the Surrey International World Music Marathon said it’s “highly unlikely” that the race will take place this year, following speculation that the marathon had been cancelled.

Elizabeth Model of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association told the Now that Surrey’s downtown core was an unfit location for the run, given the route’s proximity to emergency services – namely Surrey Memorial Hospital – and the high level of traffic in the city centres of Whalley and Newton.

However, she said its absence this year doesn’t mean the marathon is gone for good.

“The Surrey marathon board and the society has not gone away,” she said. “We still would really like to do a marathon somewhere in Surrey, and we feel there is room for one. It’s just not in the downtown core.”

While the BIA is taking a step back from organizing the run, Model said if another group expressed interest in holding the marathon elsewhere in Surrey, the marathon society would be open to lending its support for the event. However, given the amount of work involved in organizing the previous marathons, she said it’s likely too late to set up one this year.

“We are willing to explore other options with other running groups or organizations for a fabulous route that would be user friendly, traffic friendly, as well as visually friendly, and have easy access for runners to get to,” she said. “The marathon board would absolutely entertain partners coming with their ideas in mind.”

In the meantime, the Downtown Surrey BIA is pursuing other possible events for the area later this year and sometime next year, though Model did not disclose the nature of the plans.

“We will push forward with a different event that’s very unique, and we’re working on that with several partners and exploring opportunities most likely for 2015,” she said. “But we do have something on the backburner for 2014 and we will make that announcement in due course.”
