VANCOUVER DESI

A Toronto-based Pakistani blogger has written and released Pakistan’s first-ever anti-homophobia children’s book.

Blogger Eiynah, known for her site Nice Mangos where she describes herself as “a Pakistani-Canadian illustrator (and) blogger who writes and draws about sexuality in Pakistan,” recently released her book My Chacha is Gay. While it’s been translated into Italian, Spanish, Urdu Arabic, Hebrew and Russian, she’s still working on officially getting it into Pakistan, according to BuzzFeed.

My Chacha is Gay stemmed from a blog she posted under the same title earlier this year, BuzzFeed reported. The post was shared more than 10,000 times, with many readers encouraging her to crowdfund to publish it as a book. She quickly met her goal and has since released the book in print.

My Chacha is Gay is about a young boy named Ahmed, his gay uncle and the Pakistan and Muslim society.

“I feel there are very few resources for children (to learn about LGBTQ people) in our country that are not painted with a religious brush,” Eiynah told BuzzFeed. “The treatment of LGBTQ people in Pakistan is incredibly unjust, as is the treatment of most minorities, or anyone that doesn’t fit the expected mould.”

“The concept of LGBTQ rights does not exist in any large-scale mainstream way. People are isolated from family, friends and loved ones over things like this. It’s no way to live.”

And while she said she was aware of the homophobic society in Pakistan, she was still “shocked” by the backlash she received after the book was published.

“The kinds of hate mail I get – calling for the death of Chacha … people have literally told me I am worthy of death because I am an enemy of ‘god’ because of this book,” she said.

Eiynah’s book My Chacha is Gay is available for purchase at Canada’s oldest LGBT bookstore Glad Day Bookshop, as well as online at mychachaisgay.com.
