New Delhi  — Two men convicted in New Delhi’s fatal Dec. 16, 2012 gang rape denied allegations that they beat up and robbed a carpenter on the same day, an Indian court heard Friday.

Accused Vinay Sharma,  said he instead went to a music event organized by a church in  south Delhi.

The other accused, Akshay Thakur, said he wasn’t even in the bus involved with the gang rape and robbery since he had left for his village in Bihar a day before the incident.

Sharma and Thakur along with Mukesh and Pawan Gupta are facing trial for allegedly beating up and robbing a carpenter, Ram Adhar, before raping and assaulting a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus.

They have been sentenced to death in the case and the sentencing hearings are underway in the Delhi High Court.

Defence counsel of the accused A.P. Singh told court he would bring witnesses forward to defend his clients and prove their innocence.

The court set March 15 for to hear statements from the two other accused.

On Jan. 10 the court concluded its evidence in the robbery case against the men, in which a total of 37 witnesses were examined.
