Amandeep Singh Bath, 27, was found shot to death in Surrey in September 2004. The nine-year-anniversary of his death is next week.

Almost nine years to the day Amandeep Singh Bath was shot to death in Surrey, two men were arrested Friday and charged in connection with his murder — for the second time.

At a hastily organized press conference Friday evening, Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the two men arrested earlier that day had previously been charged in conection with Bath’s death in 2004, only to have the charges stayed a year later.

Amandeep Singh Bath, 27, was found shot to death in Surrey on Sept. 24, 2004.

On the night of his murder, Bath had phoned 911 to report he was being followed in his car by the two suspects. Both vehicles came to a stop in the 9100-block of 125th Street in Surrey, where the confrontation ensued and Bath was shot and killed.

In the weeks following Bath’s death in 2004, two men, Parminder Singh Basran, and Bhabjit Singh Aujla, were arrested and charged in connection with Bath’s death. But the following year, the charges were stayed after a review of the evidence.

At that time, a Crown spokesman said the evidence “no longer supported a viable prosecution.”

Bath’s murder was the first file assigned to IHIT’s cold-case unit when the unit was formed in 2012.

Aujla, 29, and Basran, 28, are scheduled to appear Monday in Surrey Provincial Court, one day before the nine-year anniversary of Bath’s death. Basran is charged with second-degree murder, while Aujla faces counts of manslaughter and accessory after the fact.

Supt. Kevin Hackett, officer in charge of IHIT, was at the press conference. Hackett thanked Bath’s family members, who were also in attendance, for their patience and trust over the past nine years.

“In most investigations, our investigators forge strong, important bonds with the victim’s family. This was certainly the case with this investigation,” Hackett said.

Bath’s aunt, Kamaljit Khela, made a brief statement in the press conference at RCMP E Division headquarters in Surrey. She remembered her nephew as “a great person. He was a very down-to-earth and gentle person.”

At the time of his death, Bath was working in an accountant’s office and living with his mother, Surjit Bath, who was also at the press conference. He had no criminal record.

“His loss has left a big whole in our hearts that can never be repaired,” said Ahela.

Khela said the family was “overwhelmed, overjoyed” to learn Aujla and Basran had been arrested again on Friday.
