NEW DELHI – A woman in her late 30s was gang-raped by three people and dumped in a south Delhi locality, police said Thursday.
The attack comes little more than a week after a young woman was gang-raped on a city bus, which led to widespread anger and street demonstrations.
One of those accused in Thursday’s rape has been detained.
The victim was found lying on the roadside in the Kalkaji area of the capital around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the other two accused are auto-drivers.
A case has been registered at the Kalkaji police station and the woman has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
On Dec. 16, six men raped and brutalized a 23-year-old physiotherapist in a moving chartered bus in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appealed for calm as the national outcry grew over the attack, while protesters demanded the death penalty for the six accused even as the victim remained critical in the hospital.
Data provided by India’s National Crime Records Bureau show about 24,200 cases of rape and 228,650 cases of crimes against women were reported in 2011.
