The Indian government has hired ape-men or men dressed as langurs to scare off monkeys from the parliament and government buildings, according to The Daily Telegraph.

“The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has hired 40 young people for this purpose,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said in parliament on Thursday.

Rubber bullets are also being used to tackle the monkey menace, Naidu said.

The macaques roam around government buildings, chew internet and telephone cables, attack staff for food and occasionally jump in through the windows and pace the corridors, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The government initiated attempts to curb this menace in 2007 following the city’s deputy mayor’s death after being attacked by monkeys and getting knocked off his balcony, according to the  Telegraph.

To deal with the problem of stray dogs, a team of dog catchers visits Parliament House and its surrounding areas twice a week.
