Caira, Lever lead Canada past Italy 8-0 at world women’s softball championship

WHITEHORSE — Toronto’s Jenna Caira struck out nine and only gave up three hits on Thursday as Canada routed Italy 8-0 in five innings at the world women’s softball championship.
The Canadians racked up seven runs in the second inning, chasing Italian pitcher Michela Muistelli Romani from the mound.
Caitlin Lever started the rally with a home run. Canada was so effective in the second that Lever had a chance to return to the plate in the same inning, cashing in two more runs with a double.
Natalie Wideman of Mississauga, Ont., scored in the fourth to cap off the Canadian scoring.
Canada now sits second in Section B with a 6-1 record. The only blemish was a loss to Japan, which is in first with a perfect 7-0 record.
The tournament’s playoffs begin Friday.
