Cameron to challenge Hunte for WICB president

Kingston (Jamaica), Feb 19 (IANS/CMC) Jamaican Whycliffe Cameron has announced plans to challenge Julian Hunte for the presidency of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

Cameron, a vice-president since 2007, is gearing up to battle incumbent Hunte at the WICB elections set for March 27, reports CMC.

“I am running for the West Indies Cricket Board presidency,” declared the 42-year-old Cameron in an interview with the Observer.

“I believe that I have the (support of) majority of the directors of the board to be the next president.”

Earlier reports suggested that 72-year old Hunte, who has served three terms as president, planned to hand over the reins to his understudy.

However, the Jamaica Observer has reported that the St. Lucian had a change of heart and attempted to negotiate an arrangement for him to remain as president before stepping down in two years.

The board members of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss whether they will be supporting compatriot Cameron to be the next WICB president.

“He (Cameron) has advised he will be challenging and we will have a board meeting Tuesday and discuss and get feedback from the members,” said JCA secretary Fritz Harris.

“I do get the impression that the JCA in general is willing to support Dave, but after that meeting we will take a formal position.”

Nominations are set to close Feb 22.
