Dundee United beats newly promoted Dundee 3-0 in first derby in 7 years

GLASGOW — Johnny Russell scored twice before being sent off as Dundee United eased to a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Dundee on Sunday in their first competitive derby in seven years.
Gavin Gunning’s header put United ahead in the 14th minute before Russell netted twice in three minutes just before half time.
Both teams had to play the final 20 minutes a man short after tackles between Dundee captain Stephen O’Donnell and Russell sparked a melee. When order was restored both Russell and O’Donnell were sent off.
United has the early lead in the Scottish Premier League, with a one-point advantage over Hearts despite playing a game less.
Defending champion Celtic was held to a 1-1 draw by Ross County on Saturday.
