Nagpur, Dec 17 (IANS) England inched closer to winning their first series in India since 1984-85 by stretching their lead to 314 runs at tea on day five of the fourth and final cricket Test here Monday.
Ian Bell (87) and Joe Root (7) were in the middle with England at 310 for four in their second innings. Jonathan Trott (143) was the lone batsman dismissed so far in the day as Indian bowlers continued to toil on a dull pitch at the VCA Stadium.
Bell too would have been back in the dressing had it not been for some sloppy fielding from Virender Sehwag. The India opener was once found lethargic at first slip, dropping the England batsman off leggie Piyush Chawla.
The final session has become a formality as India look set to suffer their first defeat at home since 2004.
Earlier in the day, Trott got his eighth Test century as England reached 240 for three at lunch.
