Field hockey reduces game time from 70 minutes to 60, goes to quarters from halves

Field hockey is changing the game from 70 minutes and two halves to 60 minutes and four quarters to make it more fan friendly.

To ensure the 60 minutes of playing time is maximised, there will be 40-second timeouts after penalty corners have been awarded and goals scored, to give teams time to reset.

The International Hockey Federation announced the rule changes on Thursday. They start on Sept. 1.

The first major event to be affected will be the Asian Games that month at Incheon, South Korea.

The changes have been trialled in the Euro Hockey League and Hockey India League.

FIH president Leandro Negre says in a statement, “The decision demonstrates our commitment to fan engagement. With the additional breaks, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy more replays and be more engaged with the event, whether in the stadium or watching from afar, while hockey commentators will be allowed more time to provide sport analysis between plays.

“In addition, coaches and players will see improvement in their performance with the additional opportunities to rehydrate and re-strategize.”
