GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Police have arrested and charged the secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board with a single count of perjury in the bitter ongoing dispute for control of the game in the country.
Anand Sanasie confirmed his arrest on Monday. He posted bail and has a scheduled court appearance this week. He faces a fine.
Sanasie was alleged to have deliberately left items off a list of possessions by the board when control of Guyana cricket was taken over by a government-appointed committee in December.
The dispute began when board elections in mid-2011 were wracked by infighting. The government, backed by the high court, appointed a committee headed by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd to take over.
But the International Cricket Council and West Indies Cricket Board continue to recognize only the Guyana board, which resigned in March, and stripped Guyana of hosting tour matches involving Australia in April and currently New Zealand.
