Hughes closes on century to lead Australia to 193-3 at tea vs. Sri Lanka

HOBART, Australia — Phil Hughes marked his return to the test side with his first ever half-century in Australia on Friday to guide the home side to 193-3 at tea on the first day of the opening test against Sri Lanka.
Brought back into the Australian X! after a year’s absence to replace the retired Ricky Ponting at No. 3, Hughes reached 82 not out at the break as Australia added 96 runs in the second session for the loss of just Shane Watson.
Watson hit 30 before falling to a sensational full-length, one-handed catch by veteran captain Mahela Jayawardene at second slip.
Australia captain Michael Clarke unbeaten on 7 at the break.
Hughes has scored three test centuries but has never scored heavily at home.
