Malaga, BATE Borisov close in on Champions League group stage with first-leg wins

LONDON — Malaga and BATE Borisov boosted their chances of reaching the Champions League group stage by winning the first legs of their playoffs 2-0 Wednesday.
Vitali Rodionov’s double secured the victory for Belarus champion BATE against Kiryat Shmona, while first-half goals from Martin Demichelis and Eliseu for Malaga saw off Panathinaikos in Spain.
Cypriot side AEL surprised 10-man Anderlecht with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Dossa Junior and Rui Miguel, while the visitors had striker Milan Jovanovic sent off midway through the second half.
Dinamo Zagreb will take a 2-1 lead to Slovenia after beating Maribor.
Sporting Braga and Udinese drew 1-1 in Portugal with Ismaily’s goal cancelling out Dusan Basta’s opener for the Italian side.
