Mangalore progress in Inter-University cricket

Manipal, Dec 18 (IANS) Mangalore University made progress in the South Zone Inter-University Cricket Tournament with a 74-run win over Periyar, Salem at the Manipal Institute of Technology ground here Tuesday.

Put in to bat, Mangalore notched up 171 in 45.1 overs, thanks to some rearguard action by Shivaraj, 42, and Mohammed Shaheer, 22.

Mangalore were six down for 83 when these two chipped in to lend some respectability to their total. Shivraj hit five fours and a six in his innings. Periyar found the going tough against the Mangalore bowlers and were shot out for 97 in 32.2 overs. Shameer with three for 24, Pawan G three for 16 and Naveen MG two for 22 shared the spoils.

Other teams to move up were Ambedkar Srikakulam, Acharya Nagarjuna, AP, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli and Bharathiar University Coimbatore. The sixth match scheduled for the day was not played as both VTU Belgaum and Karunya, Coimbatore failed to show up.

At Manipal University Ground 1: Dr BR Ambedkar University Srikakulam beat Thiruvalluvar Vellore by nine runs.

Dr BR Ambedkar, Srikakulam 78 in 34.5 overs: (Yogeshwar Rao 16, Laksminarayan 12, Rajshekhar 12 n.o.. Ravi Kiran 13. G Kamalesh 5 for 22 and Muddasir Hasan 2 for 15). Thiruvalluvar, Vellore 69 in 29.5 overs: (Ezhumalai 14 n.o. S.H. Srinivas 3 for 30, Abdul Quddish 3 for 20 and Rajsekhar 2 for 13).

At Manipal University Ground 2: Acharya Nagarjuna university, Andhra Pradesh scored a big win over Davangere University.

Acharya Nagarjuna 222 in 49.2 overs (Pathan Bashakhan 59, K Rajeev 21, D Harshavardhan Naidu 33, D Thumman 11, V Srikanth 51. Pawan 3 for 26, Karan 2 for 34 and Manjunath 4 for 53). Davangere University 83 in 28 overs: (Sandep 13, Praveen 14, Ankush 12, Niranjan 23. Mahesh 2 for 24, Sunil 2 for 11 and Srikanth 4 for 7).

At MGM College: Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli scored a 52-run win over Christ University Bangalore.

Bharathidasan, Tiruchirappalli 196 in 46 overs (Babu 38, Sarvanan M 63, Pradeep Krishna 15, Anbarasan 18, Subhash 13. Nihal 4 for 28). Christ University Bangalore 144 in 39.5 overs: (Sajeed 24, Nihal FS 22, Rishith Kapoor 12, Karan Lamba 18, Bimang 14, Tushar OP 12, Surya 18. S Saravanan 2 for 19, Balasubramanyam 2 for 25 and Saleem 2 for 19).

At NITK Surathkal: Bharathiar University Coimbatore advanced with an eight wicket win over Central University Kasaragod.

Central U, Kasaragod 74 in 22. 3 overs (Vishak 35, Lokanath 18. Dinesh 2 for 14, Kennedy Santhiyagu 2 for 17, and Abhinav 4 for 11). Bharathiar University Coimbatore 79 for 2 in 22.3 overs (Sadiq 55 n.o).
