Manly beats Souths to revive NRL title defence, Bulldogs post 11th-straight win

SYDNEY, Australia — Winger Jorge Taufua scored two tries as Manly beat Souths 23-6 in round 23 of Australia’s National Rugby League, breaking Souths’ six-match winning streak and revitalizing its own title defence.
Souths scored the opening try after five minutes before Manly ran in 23 unanswered points to post its third-straight win and lift itself to fourth place on the premiership ladder.
The impending return from injury of stars Steve Matai and Jason King will only boost Manly’s bid to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since the NRL was established in 1998 at the end of the Super League era.
Souths dropped to third place when Melbourne beat Gold Coast 24-16, continuing its revival from a five-match losing streak which cost it a comfortable place atop the premiership ladder.
