JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South Africa began its pursuit of the 10 wickets that would bring victory in the first test against Pakistan by claiming the scalp of opener Mohammad Hafeez before lunch on day three.
South Africa had delivered a statement of intent as it declared its innings to set Pakistan 480 to win the first test on just the third morning and its bowlers made an early impact when Vernon Philander had Hafeez caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.
Pakistan reached the lunch break on 47-1, still 433 runs shy of what would be a world-record chase, with Nasir Jamshed on 39 not out.
South Africa declared its second innings on 275-3 after AB de Villiers had brought up his 15th test century just 45 minutes into the first session of the day. Hashim Amla was unbeaten on 74.
