PAARL, South Africa — New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl in the first match of their three-game one-day international series against South Africa at Boland Park on Saturday.
South Africa handed debuts to rising young star in wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and seam bowler Rory Kleinveldt, who has played in tests and Twenty20s for his country in the past. The hosts will be led by limited-overs captain AB de Villiers, but test skipper Graeme Smith is also in the starting XI.
New Zealand, beaten heavily in their two-match test series that concluded earlier this week, also named two new caps in their side. Left-arm paceman Mitchell McClenaghan plays his first one-dayer having impressed earlier in the tour during the T20s, while all-rounder Jimmy Neesham was also picked.
Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum confirmed at the toss that he will be batting at number five as he looks to add some much-needed middle order steel to the New Zealand lineup.
The match in Paarl is the 10th at the venue and just the fourth featuring South Africa. They have never lost at the ground and bowled Sri Lanka out for just 43 there last summer on their way to a 258-run win.
