Moscow, Mar 1 (IANS) Volunteers recruitment for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 has seen a concluded, organising committee of the Games said Friday.
“There have been over 150,000 applications, and the Organising Committee has chosen more than 80 percent of the candidates as volunteers for the Winter Games of 2014,” the committee’s website said, adding that Friday has been selected as a closing day to mark the International Volunteer Day.
During this year, 5,000 volunteers will attend training in the test events in the venues of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games.
Volunteers from over 100 countries have been enrolled through 26 enlistment centres in 17 cities across Russia, the website said.
“We are very proud of our volunteers. They have already proved themselves at the Games in London and at the test events,” Dmitry Chernyshenko, president of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee said.
“Now they are going through one of the most complex experiences — the work at the numerous test competitions of the 2012-2013 season, which will become the ‘dress rehearsal’ for the Games in Sochi,” he said.
Mass training of the volunteers starts March, 11. The Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi will kick off Feb 7, 2014 and run through to Feb 23.
