JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Pakistan must score a world-record 480 if it is to win the first test against South Africa after the hosts declared their second innings on 275-3 on the morning of the third day.
South Africa resumed on its overnight total of 207-3, and batsmen AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla scored at will as they added 68 runs in just 45 minutes.
After a boundary took De Villiers to 103 not out from 117 balls, South Africa captain Graeme Smith immediately declared the innings despite the match being midway through its seventh session. Amla was unbeaten on 74.
South Africa bowled Pakistan out for just 49 on day two, with fast bowler Dale Steyn taking 6-8, to take a 204-run lead in the first innings.
