SYDNEY, Australia — Australia paceman Mitchell Starc took the prize wicket of Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene to help restrict the tourists to 169-4 at tea on day one of the third test.
Jackson Bird took two wickets in the first session before Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne resumed the middle session at 80-2.
The pair appeared well placed to build a decent total as they took their partnership to 62 before Starc returned to the attack and Jayawardene (72) edged him to Michael Clarke at first slip. Peter Siddle trapped Thilan Samaraweera lbw for 12.
Thirimanne was unbeaten on 37 at the interval, with Angelo Mathews yet to score.
Australia, which leads the three-match series 2-0, won the toss and sent Sri Lanka in to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
