JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Dale Steyn took a career-best 11-60 as South Africa wrapped up a crushing 211-run win over Pakistan on day four of the first test at the Wanderers on Monday.
Having taken an astonishing 6-8 in the first innings, Steyn finished with figures of 5-52 in the second as Pakistan was bowled out for 268, giving South Africa captain Graeme Smith a victory in his 100th test as captain.
A 127-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq had given Pakistan the slightest glimmer of hope in its chase of 480, but the second new ball banished any chance of a record-breaking win on the fourth morning.
Steyn had Shafiq caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis in the third over after the new ball was taken, and then induced an edge from Misbah in the fifth.
Vernon Philander got rid of Sarfraz Ahmed when he forced the batsman to play on, before wicketkeeper AB de Villiers broke the South African record for most dismissals in a test match when Saeed Ajmal provided De Villiers’ 10th catch of the match.
When Steyn had Umar Gul caught behind, the fast bowler completed his 10-wicket haul and also took De Villiers level with the world record for dismissals in a test match, which he now shares with England’s Jack Russell.
Steyn wrapped up the first 11-wicket haul of his career, which already boasted four 10-wicket hauls before this test, when he trapped Junaid Khan lbw.
South Africa has now won its last four tests by convincing margins, and is unbeaten in 13. Should it win one of the remaining two tests against Pakistan it would extend its unbeaten run in test series to 12.
